Celebrating Uganda’s Public Relations Trailblazers: Excellence, Creativity, and Collaboration at the 2024 PRAU Awards

The Public Relations Association of Uganda (PRAU) hosted the prestigious PRAU Excellence Awards 2024 on Friday 29th November 2024 at Protea Hotel, Upper Kololo Terrace, in a dazzling celebration of innovation, creativity, and professionalism. Under the theme “Recognizing Innovation,” the event highlighted transformative PR campaigns and exceptional practitioners redefining Uganda’s communication industry.

A Night of Gratitude and Vision

In her heartfelt opening remarks, Tina Wamala, President of PRAU, acknowledged the immense talent and dedication of Uganda’s PR community:
“We deeply appreciate our members, sponsors, and all the professionals who submitted their outstanding work. Innovation is the driving force of our industry, inspiring progress and excellence. Tonight, is about celebrating the innovators who elevate our profession.”

The evening set the stage for honoring exemplary achievements and showcasing the transformative power of public relations in shaping narratives, fostering trust, and driving impact across diverse sectors.

The PRAU Excellence Awards 2024 recognized brilliance across an array of categories, applauding trailblazers who have redefined communication strategies. The winners included:

  • Best Event/Experiential Campaign – Sauti Plus
  • Best Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)/ESG Campaign – Uganda Breweries Limited

Students’ Category: A Special Recognition

The Students’ Category presented a unique milestone this year. While no submission met the official threshold for an award, Ms. Esther Nampeera received a Certificate of Commendation for her standout entry, marking a pivotal moment in the category’s history and setting a precedent for recognizing emerging talent.

Commendations from Leaders and Experts

Hon. Shatsi Musherure Kutesa, the Guest of Honour, lauded PRAU’s efforts in advancing the PR profession:
“Awards like this honor excellence and inspire professionals to reach their highest potential. PRAU’s commitment to fostering professionalism and innovation is crucial for the growth of the industry.”
She also reaffirmed her support for the Public Relations Practitioners’ Bill, a landmark initiative for elevating PR practice in Uganda.

Dr. Innocent Nahabwe, Lead Judge and Chairman of the National Association of Broadcasters, reflected on the stellar quality of submissions:
“The level of professionalism, creativity, and excellence showcased this year is truly inspiring. Effective communication transforms businesses, communities, and societies, and tonight’s awards reflect that impact.”

Representing the Uganda Advertising Association President, Zaninka Lyz Cynthia (MCIPR) emphasized collaboration:
“Partnerships between PRAU, the Uganda Advertising Association, and the Uganda Marketers Society demonstrate the strength of working together. Tonight, we celebrate not only the winners but the collective commitment to fostering innovation and excellence in communication.”

Today was a heartwarming moment of pride and collaboration as the Public Relations Association of Uganda (PRAU) officially handed over the Best Event Experiential Campaign Award to SAUTI Plus, the deserving winners of this prestigious accolade at the PRAU Excellence Awards 2024.

Although SAUTI Plus was unable to attend the awards gala, their outstanding work in creating impactful and innovative campaigns earned them this recognition. The ceremony was a celebration of their achievements and a reflection of the unwavering commitment to excellence in public relations.

In a meaningful engagement during the handover, PRAU and SAUTI Plus explored ways to forge a partnership aimed at advancing PR excellence in Uganda. The PRAU Excellence Awards 2024, held on November 29th at the elegant Protea Hotel – Upper Kololo Terrace, will be remembered for many remarkable highlights. However, one unprecedented moment in the Students’ Category stands out. A groundbreaking decision that redefined the standards of excellence.

For the first time in the awards’ history, the Students’ Category did not yield an official award winner. The judges, adhering to strict criteria, determined that none of the submissions achieved the required percentage threshold to qualify as nominees. Despite this, the judging panel commended the effort and creativity demonstrated by all participants, reflecting the growing potential within Uganda’s public relations industry.

Among the submissions, Ms. Esther Nampeera emerged as a standout. While her submission did not meet the threshold for the main award, the judges recognized her exceptional work and proposed a special acknowledgment. To honor her efforts and inspire upcoming PR professionals, Ms. Nampeera was presented with a Certificate of Commendation, a first in the history of the PRAU Excellence Awards.
